2018-05-19 · Immanuel Wallerstein's highly influential, multi-volume opus, The Modern World-System, is one of this century's greatest works of social science. An innovative, panoramic reinterpretation of global history, it traces the emergence and development of the modern world from the sixteenth to the twentieth century.

The modern world-system. The modern world-system is not the only world-system that has existed. There were many others. It is, however, the first one that was organised and able to consolidate itself as a capitalist world-economy. Although initially formed primarily in (part of) Europe, its inner logic propelled it to seek the expansion of its Future Demise of the World Capitalist System: Concepts for Comparative Analysis .
